Thai Massage

Traditional Thai Massage or “ancient massage” (noad phaen boran, as it is called in Thailand), is commonly called this because over the centuries it has not undergone any transformation, neither in technique nor in spirit, therefore it boasts a long tradition. It is normally used in Thai everyday life to normalize any painful physical and psychophysical alterations and states, but also for a deeper rebalancing, such as the emotional and energetic one.

It is believed that the legendary founder of this art is thought to have been a northern Indian doctor known as Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (affectionately nicknamed “daddy doctor” or “father of medicine” by Thais). He was a close contemporary of the buddha and personal physician of Bimbisara, King of Magadha, more than 2500 years ago. He was also a doctor of the Shanga, i.e. the order of Buddhist nuns and monks.

In Thailand strange deformations of this name can be found, such as Shivago Komarpaj, Shivaka Komarpatr, Shivago Kumar Baj; the Roman letter version of the original Pali name is mainly used.

Following the evolution of massage techniques practiced in Thailand we discover that, incredibly, its oldest roots are not in this country, but in India.

To understand the reasons that led to the spread of this Ayurvedic practice in Thailand, but also to its extinction in India, one must know that the massage was transmitted together with religious teaching and was practiced in sacred Buddhist temples.
